First Presbyterian Church of Wewoka
Presbyterians have been around a very long time. They were among the first churches established in colonial America and took a lead in fighting for independence from England, with King George III referring to the American Revolution as a Presbyterian Revolt.
First Presbyterian Church (FPC) of Wewoka was established in 1928 and has been a part of the City of Wewoka and surrounding areas ever since.
The name Presbyterian refers to a form of church government where lay people and clergy have equal say in the leadership and management of the church. It is a balance between congregational (where each church does its own thing) and episcopal (where groups of congregations are under the authority of bishops). Presbyterianism is a representative democracy and the Founding Fathers borrowed many of the principles upon which the United States government is based from Presbyterian polity.
Our church's denomination is the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The PCUSA is divided up geographically into 16 synods, which are further divided into 170 presbyteries. FPC Wewoka is one of 46 congregations comprising Indian Nations Presbytery, which is one of the presbyteries within the Synod of the Sun. Just like we elect state and national representatives in civil government, we elect representatives to serve at the presbytery, synod, and national levels in the church.
Presbyterian churches, believing that Christ has called us to model the Kingdom of God to the world, place an emphasis on mission work, social justice, and peacemaking.
Some Notable Presbyterians:
We, as Presbyterians, share the core beliefs of most Christian churches that you may be familiar with, including that there is one God in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to us in the flesh, died for our sins, and rose from the dead. Those who accept Christ as their savior will inherit eternal life.
Presbyterian belief more specifically comes from the Reformed Tradition which emphasizes grace, the sovereignty of God, the authority of scripture, and discipleship. This tradition comes from the teachings of such theologians as John Calvin and Karl Barth, and a number of historical faith statements such as the Westminster Confession of Faith.
How our beliefs affect what we do:
· Grace - .we strive to accept and love all who seek to follow Christ regardless of their lifestyles or circumstances, because God has first forgiven our own short-comings and has accepted and loved us.
· Sovereignty of God - knowing God is in charge and we are not, frees us to step out in faith, service, and obedience regardless of the difficulty of the task or the amount of naysaying.
· Authority of Scripture - holding the Bible to be the one holy, inspired and authoritative word of God, we measure our words and deeds according to its teachings about love, forgiveness, service, and eternal life.
· Discipleship- Jesus doesn't just save us from death, he saves us in this life as well, offering us the opportunity and the gifts to continue the work he started. We gratefully respond in faith to his call as each of us discovers and learns to use our unique set of gifts to fulfill the purpose for which God created us.
